About This Stage

The walk from Golega to Tomar marks the transition from the flat Ribatejo to hillier terrain. The route passes through quiet countryside dotted with olive groves and eucalyptus plantations, with gradually increasing elevation changes as you approach Tomar.

Tomar is the highlight destination of the early Central route. The city is dominated by the Convento de Cristo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. The Manueline window of the Chapter House is one of Portugal's most iconic architectural details. Below the convent, Tomar's old town sits along the Nabao River with tree-lined streets, outdoor cafes, and a lively atmosphere.

Tomar has comprehensive services including a hospital, multiple supermarkets, banks, and a wide range of accommodation from hostels to hotels. Many pilgrims take a rest day here to explore the convent and recharge before the demanding stages ahead.

Terrain: Rural roads, forest paths, undulating terrain with some climbs

Tips for This Stage

Consider taking a rest day in Tomar to visit the Convento de Cristo (allow 2-3 hours for a proper visit). The stages ahead into the Beira region are significantly hillier, so this is a good place to recover. Book accommodation in advance during summer.
