About This Stage

A short stage that brings pilgrims into Porto, Portugal's second city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route descends through suburban areas before reaching the Douro River and crossing into the historic centre via the iconic Ponte de Dom Luis I bridge, with panoramic views over the city's stacked riverfront buildings.

Porto is a major milestone on the Central route and the starting point for most pilgrims walking the Portugues. The city's Ribeira waterfront, port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, Livraria Lello bookshop, and Sao Bento railway station (with its azulejo tile panels) are highlights. The cathedral (Se do Porto) is where many pilgrims collect their first stamp.

As a major city, Porto has every service imaginable. Accommodation ranges from pilgrim hostels to luxury hotels. The food scene is outstanding, with francesinha sandwiches and fresh seafood among the local specialties.

Terrain: Suburban roads, riverside paths, cobblestone streets, urban walking
