A Guarda is the first town pilgrims reach in Spain after taking the ferry from Caminha across the Rio Minho. It is a lively fishing town with a harbour, good restaurants, and a municipal albergue.
The town's main attraction is the Celtic Castro de Santa Trega, a hillfort on Monte Santa Trega with panoramic views across the Minho estuary to Portugal and out over the Atlantic. The climb is a worthwhile detour for pilgrims with time and energy.
A Guarda has ATMs, supermarkets, pharmacies, and a range of accommodation. Remember to set clocks forward one hour when arriving in Spain. The seafood here is excellent, with the harbour restaurants serving fresh catches daily.
