About Alto de Piedratecha
Alto de Piedratecha sits at one of the higher points along the Camino Primitivo, the oldest of the Camino de Santiago routes, traditionally said to have been walked by King Alfonso II of Asturias in the 9th century when he traveled from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela. The pass cuts through the mountainous interior of Asturias, a region of dense forest, steep valleys, and frequent mist that gives this stretch of the Primitivo a distinctly wilder feel compared to more traveled Camino routes.
The alto itself is well known among cyclists tackling the roads of Asturias, where mountain passes like this one have built a serious reputation among road cycling enthusiasts drawn to the region's challenging terrain. For pilgrims on foot, the high point marks a meaningful moment in the journey before the route drops down onto the AS-350 road and the long descent begins.
The views from the pass take in layers of wooded ridgelines stretching across the Asturian highlands, largely undeveloped and quiet. The hamlet here is small, with little in the way of services, so pilgrims should plan ahead and carry what they need before reaching the alto. The surrounding landscape, rather than any built feature, is the reason to pause here.
