About Burgos

Burgos is one of the great cities of the Camino Frances, dominated by its magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Gothic cathedral. The cathedral's ornate facade, soaring spires, and richly decorated interior make it one of the finest in all of Europe.

The city has a full range of services including albergues, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, ATMs, pharmacies, and a hospital. The old town along the Rio Arlanzon is elegant, with the Arco de Santa Maria gate, the Cartuja de Miraflores monastery, and excellent Castilian cuisine.

Burgos is famous for its morcilla (blood sausage) and roast lamb. The city is also associated with the legendary Castilian hero El Cid, whose tomb lies in the cathedral. A rest day here is well worth it.

Things to Do in Burgos

Sightseeing

Visit the Cathedral

The Cathedral of Burgos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest Gothic buildings in Europe. Construction began in 1221 and continued for over 300 years, resulting in a breathtaking mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Highlights include the Constable's Chapel, the Golden Staircase by Diego de Siloe, and the tomb of El Cid and his wife Dona Jimena beneath the central dome. Allow at least two hours.

Relaxation

Walk Along the Rio Arlanzon

The tree-lined riverbank running through the centre of Burgos is one of the most pleasant walks in any city on the Camino. Shaded promenades, park benches, and cafe terraces line both sides. In the early evening, half of Burgos seems to be out for a stroll here. Cross the historic bridges for views back towards the cathedral towers.

Sightseeing

Explore the Old Town

The streets around the cathedral are packed with medieval and Renaissance architecture. Walk through the Arco de Santa Maria, the ornate city gate, and into the Plaza del Rey San Fernando. The narrow streets behind the cathedral are full of tapas bars and small shops. Look for the bronze statue of a pilgrim resting on a bench, one of the most photographed statues on the Camino.

Food & Drink

Eat Morcilla de Burgos

Burgos is famous for its morcilla (blood sausage), made with rice, onion, and spices. It is unlike any blood sausage you have tried before, lighter and more flavourful. Order it grilled or as a pintxo at any bar in the old town. Pair it with a local Ribera del Duero red wine. Also try the queso fresco de Burgos, a fresh soft cheese that appears on every menu.

Sightseeing

Visit the Monasterio de las Huelgas

A royal Cistercian monastery founded in 1187 by King Alfonso VIII. For centuries it was one of the most powerful religious institutions in Spain, and its abbess held extraordinary authority. The Romanesque cloister, the Gothic church, and the Museum of Medieval Fabrics (containing original royal garments from the tombs) are fascinating. About 1.5 km from the city centre, an easy walk or short taxi ride.

Sightseeing

See the Arco de Santa Maria

The grand 14th-century city gate that served as the main entrance to Burgos from the Camino. The ornate facade features statues of El Cid, Emperor Charles V, and other historical figures important to the city. Inside, there is a small free museum and exhibition space. It frames the approach to the cathedral perfectly.

Relaxation

Rest in the Paseo del Espolon

The main promenade of Burgos, running along the river and shaded by plane trees. Locals gather here at all hours. There are benches, a bandstand, and several cafe terraces. After days of walking through small villages, the gentle buzz of a Spanish city going about its evening is a treat.
