Castromaior sits in the province of Lugo, in Galicia, on the Camino between Gonzar and Hospital da Cruz. The Camino passes through the hamlet, and a signposted detour leads to the principal local landmark.
The Castro de Castromaior is a major Iron Age Celtic hillfort dating from the 4th century BCE to the 1st century CE, with the best preservation of any castro in central Galicia. Substantial stone walls, foundations of circular dwellings, defensive ditches, and the layout of streets between the houses are all clearly visible. The settlement was occupied through the Roman conquest of northern Iberia and abandoned in the early imperial period. The site is freely accessible and has been excavated and partly consolidated.
Services in Castromaior are limited. There is a small bar. There is no albergue, no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM.
