Cizur Menor is a useful Camino stop just after Pamplona, with albergues, food options, the Romanesque Church of San Miguel, and views toward Alto del Perdón.
Cizur Menor is a small town in Navarra on the Camino Francés, about 4 to 5 km after Pamplona. It is often the first place pilgrims stop after leaving the city, especially before the climb toward Alto del Perdón.
The town has a strong Camino history. Its most important historic site is the Church of San Miguel Arcángel (worth dropping into, next door to the Albergue), a late 12th-century Romanesque church that once formed part of a monastery and pilgrim complex linked to the Order of Malta. The old monastery has disappeared, but the church remains one of the main Camino landmarks in Cizur Menor.
For pilgrims today, Cizur Menor is practical and easy. It has pilgrim accommodation, places to eat (although they are off the path and tend to open abit later in the day), and basic services, much less than you would find in Pamplona. It can work well as an overnight option for those who skipped Pamplona but don't expect much else.
After Cizur Menor, the Camino leaves the urban edge of Pamplona and heads toward open countryside, fields, and the climb to Alto del Perdón. Be sure to look back at Pamplona as you enter the town as it's quite the sight.
