About Espinosa del Camino

Espinosa del Camino is a small village in Burgos province on the Camino Francés, between Villambistia and Villafranca Montes de Oca. For pilgrims, it is a quiet passing point before the route begins its gradual climb toward the Montes de Oca.

The village has an old Camino history and was once connected to the lordship of the Hospital of Villafranca. Its name is often linked to the idea of thorns or thorny ground, from the Latin “spinosus.” The main sight is the Parish Church of La Asunción de Nuestra Señora, and the village also has traditional houses typical of this part of Burgos.

For pilgrims today, Espinosa del Camino has limited services. It may offer a place to rest or stay depending on the season, but it is not a full resupply town. Villafranca Montes de Oca is the more reliable stop for accommodation, food, and supplies before the climb ahead.

The important route note is that the Camino starts to feel more demanding after this area. From Espinosa, the path heads toward Villafranca Montes de Oca and then into the Montes de Oca, so make sure you have water, snacks, and enough energy before pushing on.
