About Esposende

Esposende is a small coastal town at the mouth of the Rio Cavado. It has a charming town centre with a good selection of restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Pilgrims will find hotels, hostels, supermarkets, pharmacies, and ATMs here. The town sits within the Litoral de Esposende Protected Landscape, and the surrounding coastline features dramatic dunes and rock formations.

Esposende is a practical overnight stop with enough services for a comfortable rest. The seafood restaurants along the waterfront are worth trying, particularly for fresh grilled fish and local vinho verde wine.

Things to Do in Esposende

Relaxation

Walk the Parque Natural do Litoral Norte

The natural park surrounds Esposende and protects one of the best-preserved stretches of coastline in northern Portugal. Dunes, salt marshes, pine forests, and wetlands support a rich diversity of birdlife and maritime plants. If you arrived via the Camino today, you walked through the park on your way here. If you have time, explore further along the estuary or the beach on foot.

Sightseeing

Cross the Iron Bridge

The Ponte Metalica de Fao, the iron bridge over the Rio Cavado, is one of the landmarks of the Camino Coastal. The bridge connects the south bank at Fao to Esposende on the north side. Crossing it on foot, with the estuary stretching out below and the town ahead, is a memorable moment. The bridge is also a good spot for photos of the surrounding landscape.

Food & Drink

Eat at the Harbour

Esposende has a small fishing harbour and the restaurants nearby serve fresh fish and seafood. The caldeirada de peixe (fish stew) is a local speciality. The restaurants on the waterfront have views across the estuary and are a pleasant place for dinner. Portions are generous and prices are fair.

History

See the Forte de Sao Joao Baptista

A small fortress at the mouth of the Rio Cavado, built in the 17th century to defend the estuary from pirates and invaders. The fortress sits near the lighthouse and the beach. It is compact but atmospheric, and the position at the river mouth gives good views along the coast in both directions.
