Stage 3 of 13

Póvoa de Varzim → Esposende

21 km | 5-6 hours | +163m / -163m

About This Stage

A flat, scenic stage that continues along the Atlantic coast through a landscape of sand dunes, pine forests, and traditional fishing villages. The route passes through the Litoral Norte Natural Park, a protected coastal area where dune systems and wetlands support diverse birdlife.

The walking follows a mix of boardwalks, sandy tracks, and quiet roads through settlements that retain a strong connection to the sea. Small fishing harbours and colourful boats add character to the route. The terrain remains gentle with minimal elevation change throughout the day.

Esposende sits at the mouth of the Cavado River, where the estuary meets the Atlantic. The town has a relaxed coastal atmosphere with good restaurants (especially for seafood), accommodation options, and basic services. The river estuary and surrounding natural areas make for pleasant evening exploration.

Terrain: Coastal boardwalks, sandy dune paths, some paved roads through villages
