About Golinhac

Golinhac sits above the dramatic Gorges du Lot in the Aveyron department, on the GR 65 and the GRP 'Lo Camin d'Olt'. The village offers the gite d'etape L'Oree du Chemin, housed in a beautifully restored barn at the hamlet of Massip, with six rooms of 2-4 beds, each with private shower and WC.

The gite has a communal kitchen, washing machine, and can accommodate horses for equestrian pilgrims. An epicerie (small grocery) and cafe are located about 2 km away in the village centre of Golinhac.

The setting above the gorges makes for spectacular views, and the area connects to the nearby village of Estaing (classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France), with its 15th-century church and Gothic bridge.

Things to Do in Golinhac

Sightseeing

Visit the Romanesque Church

The small parish church of Golinhac has a Romanesque bell tower and a simple stone interior. The churchyard offers good views across the surrounding plateau. Rural churches like this, built from local stone and serving tiny communities for centuries, are one of the defining features of the Aveyron countryside. Step inside for a moment of quiet before dinner.

Relaxation

Look Back Towards Estaing

From the higher ground around Golinhac, you can look back towards the Lot valley and the direction you climbed from. The castle of Estaing may be visible in the distance. The perspective gives you a sense of the terrain you have covered today and the constant rhythm of descent and ascent that defines Le Chemin du Puy through the Aveyron.

Food & Drink

Eat Demi-Pension at the Gite

The gite in Golinhac serves a communal dinner that will feature regional Aveyron cooking: soups, local meats, cheese (Laguiole or Cantal from nearby), and dessert. The bread and wine are included. At a table this small, in a village this quiet, the conversation tends to be deeper than in larger stops. You may learn where your fellow pilgrims started, what brought them here, and where they hope to end up.

Camino Moment

Anticipate Conques

Tomorrow you walk to Conques. If you have been reading about Le Chemin du Puy, you know that Conques is the emotional and architectural centrepiece of the route. The abbey church, the medieval village, the treasure of Sainte-Foy, and the descent through ancient forest into the Dourdou valley are all ahead of you. Tonight in Golinhac is the quiet before something extraordinary. Rest well.
