About This Stage
The path descends through increasingly dramatic terrain to Conques, one of France's Plus Beaux Villages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The approach reveals the village gradually: a cluster of slate-roofed stone houses clinging to a steep hillside above the Dourdou River.
The Abbaye Sainte-Foy houses the most important collection of medieval reliquary art in France. The 9th-century reliquary of Sainte Foy, a golden statue encrusted with gems, is displayed in the treasury. The abbey's Romanesque tympanum, depicting the Last Judgement with vivid carved figures of the saved and the damned, is considered one of the masterpieces of medieval sculpture.
Conques is magical at dawn or dusk, when the tour buses have gone and the village belongs to pilgrims and residents.
Terrain: Ridge paths, steep forested descents, river valley trails, medieval village cobblestones
