About Logroño

Logrono is the capital of La Rioja, Spain's most celebrated wine region, and one of the culinary highlights of the Camino Frances. The Calle Laurel and surrounding streets form one of Spain's most famous pintxos (tapas) zones, where each bar specialises in a signature dish.

The city has a full range of services including albergues, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, ATMs, pharmacies, and a hospital. The historic old town features the Cathedral of Santa Maria de la Redonda, the Church of Santiago, and pleasant riverside walks along the Ebro.

Logrono is a natural rest day destination. The Rioja wine country surrounding the city offers wine tasting and vineyard visits for those with extra time. The city has a bus station with connections across Spain.

Things to Do in Logroño

Food & Drink

Pintxos Crawl on Calle Laurel

The most famous food street on the entire Camino and possibly in all of northern Spain. Over 50 bars line this narrow lane and its side streets, each specialising in one signature pintxo. The tradition is simple: order a small glass of Rioja wine, eat one pintxo, move to the next bar, repeat. Bar Soriano (garlic mushrooms with a shrimp) and Bar Angel (mushroom tower) are legendary. Budget 2 to 3 euros per stop.

Sightseeing

Visit the Concatedral de Santa Maria de la Redonda

The twin Baroque bell towers of this 16th-century cathedral dominate the centre of the old town. The interior is impressive, with a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Look for the painting attributed to Michelangelo in one of the side chapels. Free entry.

Sightseeing

See the Iglesia de San Bartolome

The oldest church in Logrono, dating from the 12th century. The intricately carved Gothic doorway is one of the finest examples of medieval stone carving in La Rioja. The Romanesque tower is original and gives a sense of how the city looked when the first pilgrims passed through.

Relaxation

Walk Along the Rio Ebro

The Puente de Piedra (stone bridge) crosses the Ebro river at the entrance to the old town. Walk along the river bank in either direction for a peaceful break from the city. The gardens of the Paseo del Espolon, just inside the old town, are shaded and have benches, a fountain, and a statue of General Espartero.

Food & Drink

Visit a Rioja Winery

You are in the capital of the most famous wine region in Spain. Several bodegas within a short drive of the city offer tours and tastings, including Marques de Murrieta, Campo Viejo, and Bodegas Ontanon. If you do not have time for a full visit, every bar in town pours excellent local Rioja by the glass.

Relaxation

Stroll Calle Portales

The main street through the old town, lined with arcaded buildings and pastel-coloured apartments dating from the 15th century. In the morning it is quiet and photogenic. By evening it fills with locals heading for dinner. A lovely street to walk with no particular purpose.

Sightseeing

Visit the Museo de la Rioja

Housed in an elegant 18th-century palace, this free museum covers the history of La Rioja from prehistory to the modern day. Highlights include Roman mosaics, medieval tablets from the San Millan monasteries, and a collection of coins and weapons. A good rainy afternoon option.
