O Outeiro is a quiet hamlet in the parish of Poulo, set in a peaceful wooded corner of Ordes. Its landmark is the Rectoral de Poulo, a historic rectory that once served as a hospital for pilgrims bound for Santiago. Restored in 2019 as a Xunta albergue, it gives this part of the route a public place to sleep in a beautiful, remote setting.
The building has distinguished guests in its past. In 1669 the entourage of Cosimo III de' Medici, heir to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, lodged here during his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Nearby, the Romanesque church of San Xulián de Poulo adds to the sense of history.
The approach is a highlight in itself: grassy paths through native woodland, an underpass beneath the AC-524 and a gentle climb toward the village. With about 14 km left to Sigüeiro, O Outeiro suits pilgrims splitting the longer stages into shorter days.
