About Piedras Blancas

Piedrasblancas sits at the administrative heart of the Castrillón municipality in Asturias, a region of northern Spain known for its rugged coastline, green hills, and deep industrial history. Officially designated as a Villa, it functions today as a busy commuter town serving workers who travel to nearby Avilés, Gijón, and Oviedo, though its roots lie in the mining and industrial economy that shaped much of coastal Asturias through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The town itself has a lived-in, workaday character rather than a polished tourist face. Traditional Asturian architecture sits alongside more modern construction, reflecting the gradual transition from industrial settlement to residential hub. The proximity of Asturias Airport, just a few kilometres to the east, has reinforced its role as a practical base in the region.

What makes Piedrasblancas genuinely useful for walkers is its access to the coast. The beaches of Salinas, Arnao, and Santa Maria del Mar are within easy reach, and the neighbouring town of Salinas carries an outsized reputation among surfers. Salinas hosts the International Festival of Longboard each July and is also home to the outdoor Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum at La Peñona, a collection of anchors gathered from Atlantic waters and displayed along the seafront cliffs. It is a quietly unusual sight worth the short detour.

The climate here is classic Asturian: mild, green, and frequently wet. Snow is rare and summer heat stays moderate, which makes the area walkable year-round, though waterproof layers are advisable in any season.
