Portugalete is a town on the Nervion estuary connected to Getxo on the opposite bank by the Vizcaya Bridge (Puente de Vizcaya), a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world's oldest transporter bridge, built in 1893. Passengers and vehicles are carried across the river in a suspended gondola.
Pilgrims will find albergues, hotels, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, ATMs, and a pharmacy. The old town has a medieval basilica and pleasant waterfront.
Riding the transporter bridge is a unique experience on the Camino. The town sits between Bilbao and Castro Urdiales on the Norte route.
