About Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias

Santibanez de Valdeiglesias sits in the province of Leon on the way from Hospital de Orbigo to Astorga. The Camino climbs gently through rolling countryside on the approach to the mountains beyond Astorga.

The village name has two parts. Santibanez derives from Sant Ibanez, an old Castilian form of Saint John, and the parish church is dedicated to John the Baptist. The second part, Valdeiglesias, means Valley of Churches, a reference to the historic concentration of small medieval churches in the surrounding countryside. The village has been a Camino waypoint since the Middle Ages.

Services in Santibanez are limited. There is an albergue, the parish-style Albergue Camino Frances, and a bar. There is no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM.
