About Sarrià
Sarria is the most important town in the final section of the Camino for a very specific reason: it is the last town that is more than 100km from Santiago, which is the minimum distance required to receive the Compostela certificate. As a result, a significant number of pilgrims begin their Camino here, and from Sarria onwards the path becomes markedly busier.
The old town climbs a steep hill from the modern lower town, and the historic quarter has a pleasant medieval character with narrow streets, a ruined castle, and the church of Santa Mariña. The albergues here are numerous and well-organised, catering to the large volume of new arrivals.
Arriving in Sarria as a long-distance pilgrim from Saint-Jean requires a psychological adjustment. The relative solitude of the Meseta and the mountains is replaced by cheerful, fresh-legged new pilgrims who have not yet shared the long weeks of the route. Most experienced pilgrims find a generosity of spirit in welcoming them, recognising their own enthusiasm from the start of their own journey.
