Sigüeiro

Capital of Oroso and the usual last overnight before Santiago. Its six-span medieval bridge over the Tambre is tied to a knights' sword fight over a woman and to fighting in the 1846 Galician uprising.

About Sigüeiro

Sigüeiro is the capital of the municipality of Oroso and the traditional last overnight on the Camino Inglés, less than 16 km from the cathedral. Its landmark is the medieval bridge over the Tambre, one of Galicia's great rivers. Attributed to Fernán Pérez de Andrade in the 14th century, it has six spans and was restored and widened in the 20th century, so vehicles still cross it today.

The bridge has seen its share of drama. Local history recalls a sword fight on it between the knights Álvaro Pérez de Moscoso and Gómez Pérez das Mariñas and their men, reportedly over a woman. Centuries later, in 1846, the area around the bridge saw fighting during that year's Galician uprising. Prehistoric burial mounds scattered around the municipality point to far older settlement.

About a kilometre from town, the Tambre splits around the Illa do Refuxio, a riverside recreation area reached by footbridges, with picnic spots and a river beach. The river here is a trout preserve, and Sigüeiro holds a trout festival each May.

Pilgrims enter through the leafy Parque do Carboeiro and reach the lively main avenue on the N-550, where most services are concentrated. With a short final stage ahead, many walkers aim to reach the Obradoiro in time for lunch or the pilgrim mass.

Camino MomentYour Last Night on the CaminoIf staying here overnight, tomorrow you will walk 17 km into Santiago de Compostela. Tonight is your last evening as a pilgrim on the trail. The atmosphere in Sigueiro's albergues and restaurants is charged with anticipation. Some pilgrims are jubilant, others reflective, a few are emotional. Have a good dinner, set your alarm, and savour the feeling of being one sleep away from the Cathedral.
RelaxationWalk Along the Rio TambreThe river runs along the edge of town and there are paths along both banks. After a long day of walking, a gentle stroll by the water with no pack on your back is a small luxury. The evening light on the river is soft and the sound of water is calming.
Camino MomentPrepare for SantiagoMost pilgrims leave Sigueiro early to arrive in Santiago in time for the noon pilgrim mass. The route passes through eucalyptus forest and quiet hamlets. Many pilgrims describe the final approach on the Camino Ingles as one of the most beautiful of any route into Santiago, with a particularly enchanting forest section in the last few kilometres. Pack your bag one last time. Tomorrow, you arrive.
FoodEat a Galician Farewell DinnerSigueiro has several restaurants and bars serving good Galician food at pilgrim prices. This is your last small-town dinner before Santiago. Order the caldo gallego, the empanada, and a bottle of local wine. Talk to the pilgrims around you. Some of them you will see again at the Cathedral tomorrow. Some you will never see again.
