About Sobrado

Sobrado dos Monxes is a village centred around the vast Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Sobrado, one of the largest and most important monasteries in Galicia. The monastery dates to the 10th century, though most of the current buildings are from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The monastery operates a pilgrim albergue, and pilgrims can attend vespers with the small community of monks who still reside there. The Romanesque kitchen and the three cloisters are impressive.

Beyond the monastery, the village has a cafe and very basic services. Sobrado is the last significant stop before the Norte joins the Frances at Arzua for the final stretch to Santiago.

History

Visit the Monastery

The Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Sobrado is a vast complex founded in 952. The Baroque church, with its elaborate facade and cavernous interior, is the centrepiece. The medieval kitchen, the Romanesque chapel of the Magdalena, and the cloisters (Renaissance and medieval) are all accessible. A small community of Cistercian monks maintains the monastery and offers pilgrim accommodation. The scale of the buildings relative to the tiny village is extraordinary. At its peak, this was one of the most po

Camino Moment

Stay at the Monastery

The monastery offers pilgrim lodging and a communal meal. Staying here, in a building that has welcomed travellers for over a thousand years, is one of the most memorable experiences on the Camino del Norte. The monks maintain the space with simplicity and care. The evening silence, after the other pilgrims have settled in and the monastery doors are closed, is profound. You are sleeping in a building that is older than most nations. The experience is available for a donation.

Food & Drink

Eat at the Village Restaurant

Sobrado has one bar-restaurant that serves simple Galician food. After what may have been a long day from Baamonde or Miraz (stages in this section can be long), a hot meal and a cold drink are welcome. The menu is limited but the food is honest: caldo gallego, grilled meat, bread, and wine. The communal atmosphere at dinner, with all the Norte pilgrims eating together, recalls the intimate evenings earlier on the route.

Camino Moment

Almost at the Frances

Sobrado dos Monxes is the last major stop before the Camino del Norte merges with the Camino Frances at Arzua, about 24 km ahead. You have been walking one of the quietest Camino routes in Spain. Tomorrow or the day after, you join the busiest. The contrast is dramatic. Pilgrims on the Norte often feel a mix of excitement and loss at this transition. The solitude that defined your route is about to end. Appreciate this last quiet evening.
