About Trobajo del Camino

Trobajo del Camino sits on the western edge of the city of Leon, in the province of Leon. Once a separate village, it has been absorbed into the urban area as Leon has expanded. The Camino runs through Trobajo along the main road heading west out of the city.

The village name appears in medieval documents from the 10th century as Travaium, with one explanation linking it to a community of Mozarabic Christians who settled here after fleeing Moorish-ruled al-Andalus. For centuries Trobajo was a farming village in the orbit of Leon, growing slowly until 20th-century urbanisation absorbed it into the city. The parish church of San Juan Bautista has medieval origins but most of what stands today is later. The village's significance on the Camino has always been as the first settled point west of Leon, where pilgrims set out into the open country toward La Virgen del Camino.

Trobajo has the services of a Leon suburb: bars, cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, small shops, and bus connections back to the city centre. Pilgrim accommodation is limited and most pilgrims walk straight through on the way out of Leon.
