About Valença
Valenca is a fortified border town perched above the Rio Minho, directly facing the Spanish city of Tui on the opposite bank. The Fortaleza de Valenca, a remarkably well-preserved 17th-century fortress with double walls and bastions, is one of the most impressive landmarks on the entire Camino Portugues.
The Camino route passes directly through the fortress, and pilgrims should allow time to explore the ramparts and enjoy the panoramic views over the river to Tui and the Spanish countryside. Inside the fortress walls, shops sell linen, towels, and other goods at competitive prices.
Valenca has a full range of services including albergues, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, ATMs, and a pharmacy. The town has a train station with connections to Porto and Viana do Castelo. From Valenca, pilgrims cross the Ponte Internacional over the Minho into Spain and Tui.
