Villafranca Montes de Oca is a small town in Burgos province on the Camino Francés, between Espinosa del Camino and San Juan de Ortega. For pilgrims, it is an important overnight or rest stop before the climb into the Montes de Oca, one of the more isolated and atmospheric stretches before Burgos.
The town has a much older history than its size suggests. It stands near the site of the ancient settlement of Auca, which became an early episcopal seat from the late 6th century before the bishopric was eventually moved to Burgos. Its name also reflects the “franca” tradition of towns connected with settlers and pilgrims from beyond the Pyrenees. The main historic sights include the Church of Santiago and the remains of old pilgrim institutions that once served walkers before the difficult mountain section.
Villafranca Montes de Oca has useful pilgrim services, including albergues, hotels, restaurants, cafés, and basic shops. It is smaller than Belorado or Burgos, but it is one of the more practical places to stop before the next long stretch. Pilgrims often stay here to start the Montes de Oca section fresh the next morning.
