Villamayor de Monjardín

Villamayor de Monjardín is a small hilltop village in Navarra on the Camino Francés, between Azqueta and Los Arcos. It is one of the last proper stops before the long open stretch to Los Arcos.

The village has an interesting medieval history. Above the town are the ruins of the Castle of San Esteban de Deyo, an important fortress in the history of Navarra. The village itself is also known for the Church of San Andrés, a Romanesque church with a notable silver processional cross.

For pilgrims, Villamayor de Monjardín is both scenic and practical. It has pilgrim accommodation, food options, and places to refill before continuing. The village has wide views over the surrounding countryside and a quieter feel than the larger towns on either side.

This is an important place to check water, food, and sun protection. After Villamayor de Monjardín, the Camino continues for around 12 km to Los Arcos with little to no shade and no reliable services. On hot days, this section can feel much harder than it looks on paper.
