About This Stage
The penultimate day, and the Camino gives you a gentle one. After yesterday's long haul, this short stage through eucalyptus forest and small Galician villages passes quickly and without drama. The terrain is easy, the paths are shaded, and the distance is merciful. The day is not about the walking. It is about what is coming tomorrow.
The route leaves Arzua on forest paths that wind through a now-familiar Galician landscape of dairy farms, stone walls, and eucalyptus plantations. The villages of A Calzada, A Calle, and Salceda offer bars and brief rest stops but little to detain you. The forest sections are pleasant and cool, the birdsong constant, the undergrowth thick and green. After days of memorable landmarks, dramatic climbs, and historic towns, this stage is deliberately unremarkable. The Camino is giving you space to think.
Santa Irene, about 4 km before the end, has a small chapel in a grove of trees and a fountain with reportedly curative waters. It is a quiet, shaded spot worth a pause. From here, the final stretch into O Pedrouzo follows forest paths and a short road section into town.
O Pedrouzo (also called Arca on some maps) is a functional town that exists almost entirely to house pilgrims the night before Santiago. It has albergues, hotels, restaurants, a pharmacy, and a supermarket, but little character of its own. That does not matter. What matters is tonight. The albergues and hotels fill early, so arrive with a plan. Set your alarm. Many pilgrims leave before dawn tomorrow, walking the final 19 km by headlamp through the forest, wanting to arrive at the Cathedral by mid-morning for the noon pilgrim mass. Eat well, sleep early, and prepare yourself. Tomorrow, you finish.
