About This Stage
A day of two acts. The first 20 km follow the narrow Valcarce valley, passing through small villages strung along the river floor beneath the shadows of the A-6 motorway viaducts. The walking is gentle and the services are frequent: Pereje, Trabadelo, La Portela de Valcarce, Ambasmestas, Vega de Valcarce (the last town with a pharmacy and supermarket), Ruitelan, and Las Herrerias all have bars and accommodation. The landscape is already shifting: chestnut trees, slate roofs, and stone walls announce that Galicia is close. Stock up on water and food in Vega de Valcarce. After Las Herrerias, the real stage begins.
From Las Herrerias, the route climbs nearly 600 metres in 8 km to O Cebreiro. The ascent is relentless. The first kilometre out of Hospital, on steep asphalt, is the sharpest shock. Then the path softens onto dirt tracks through pastures and heather, zigzagging up the mountainside through La Faba and Laguna de Castilla. Just beyond Laguna, a stone cairn marks the border between Castilla y Leon and Galicia, the final autonomous community of the Camino. You have 152 km left to Santiago. Shorten your steps, steady your breathing, and keep going. The views back over El Bierzo improve with every metre gained.
O Cebreiro is a pre-Roman settlement of pallozas, round thatched stone huts that have been here since before the Romans came. The 9th-century Iglesia de Santa Maria la Real is one of the oldest churches on the Camino and houses the Holy Grail of O Cebreiro, a chalice associated with a medieval Eucharistic miracle. The grave of Don Elias Valina, the parish priest who created the yellow arrows that guide every pilgrim to Santiago, lies inside the church. If you arrive for sunset, walk up to the hilltop cross above the village. The views across the Ancares mountains, with the light fading behind the ridgelines, are among the most beautiful on the entire route.
