Rabanal del Camino

Rabanal del Camino sits in the province of Leon, in the Maragateria region, at the foot of the Montes de Leon. It is the last settlement before the climb to the highest point of the Camino Frances at Cruz de Ferro, and has been a critical staging point for the mountain crossing since the Middle Ages. The Camino runs through the heart of the village.

In the 12th century the Knights Templar held Rabanal del Camino as part of their network of properties protecting the pilgrim route. The village was strategically important because it sat at the foot of the most demanding mountain pass on the route to Santiago, and the Templars maintained a hospice here for pilgrims preparing for the climb. The Iglesia de Santa Maria has Romanesque origins from the Templar period and is built of the heavy mountain stone typical of the region. The Templar association ended with the suppression of the order in the early 14th century, but the village remained a Camino institution. In the late 20th century the Benedictine monastic community of San Salvador del Monte Irago was refounded in Rabanal by German Benedictines from Saint Ottilien, and now maintains a presence in the village with a small monastery, a monastic albergue, and daily Gregorian chant vespers and pilgrim masses.

Rabanal has good services for a village of its size. There are albergues including the parish-run Albergue Gaucelmo (operated by the British Confraternity of Saint James), the monastic Albergue Monasterio San Salvador, and private albergues, alongside restaurants, bars, a small shop, and casas rurales and small hotels. There is no pharmacy or ATM. Most pilgrims overnight here before tackling the mountain stage to Ponferrada the following day.
