About Monesterio
Monesterio is a small town marking the entry into Extremadura from Andalusia on the Via de la Plata. The town is known for its Iberian ham (jamon iberico de bellota), produced from acorn-fed pigs that graze in the surrounding dehesa.
Pilgrims will find an albergue, restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, and a pharmacy. The Ham Museum (Museo del Jamon) celebrates the local product.
Monesterio sits on the historic Roman road, and milestones from the original Via de la Plata can be found in the area. The Extremaduran section of the route is characterised by vast open landscapes, hot temperatures, and widely spaced towns.
