Albergue de Peregrinos Paroquial São Salvador de Grijó

Espartano is a simple pilgrim hostel housed in an old building on the edge of Grijó, a small parish in Vila Nova de Gaia that sits just south of Porto along the Camino Português. The house has the feel of a place that has been doing this job quietly for years, without much fuss or renovation.

Accommodation is spread over two floors, mostly in rooms with bunk beds. There is no heating, so pilgrims arriving in cooler months should come prepared with layers. A patio at the back offers a useful and secure spot to leave bicycles overnight.

The arrangement for check-in is informal but reliable: a neighbor holds the keys and opens up for arriving pilgrims. The hospitalero comes by in the afternoon to stamp credential passbooks and collect payment, so there is no need to wait anxiously by the door on arrival.
