Albergue Bide Ona

Albergue Bide Ona sits in Portugalete, a compact industrial town on the left bank of the Nervión estuary that has played an outsized role in Basque history. The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century alongside the iron and steel industries that transformed the region, and its working-class character is still visible in its dense urban fabric and the remarkable Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage transporter bridge completed in 1893 that connects Portugalete to Getxo across the estuary. It was the first transporter bridge in the world and remains fully operational, ferrying passengers and vehicles in a suspended gondola. The town's old quarter climbs steeply from the waterfront and rewards a short wander.

For pilgrims walking the Camino del Norte, or the Camino Primitivo via the coastal route, Portugalete is a practical and genuinely interesting stopping point rather than just a waystation. The proximity to Bilbao, roughly 12 kilometers up the estuary, means the city's museums and old town are accessible for those with time to spare.
