About this property

This pilgrim hostel sits in Barcelos, one of the most historically rich towns on the Portuguese Camino. Barcelos is famous throughout Portugal for the legend of the Galo de Barcelos, the rooster that became the country's most recognizable folk symbol. The story goes that a pilgrim passing through on his way to Santiago was wrongly accused of theft and sentenced to hang. He declared that a roasted rooster on the judge's table would crow to prove his innocence, and it did. The cock figure has been reproduced in ceramic millions of times since and is sold in markets and shops across the country, but Barcelos is where the legend originates.

The town itself rewards a slow walk. The ruins of the medieval Paço dos Condes palace sit above the Rio Cávado, alongside the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Terço with its extraordinary azulejo interior, and the archaeological museum which displays the original stone cross associated with the rooster legend. The weekly Thursday market, one of the largest and oldest in Portugal, has been running since the 15th century and fills the Campo da República with regional produce, crafts, and ceramics.

The hostel is a donativo, meaning pilgrims contribute what they can, and accommodates up to 20 people across three communal rooms with gender-separated bathrooms. A kitchen is available free of charge, stocked with a stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, along with laundry facilities and WiFi. Disposable bed and pillow protectors are available. Café Araújo next door covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making this a practical and comfortable overnight stop before continuing north toward Ponte de Lima or Tui.
