Albergue de la Piedra

Albergue de la Piedra sits in Villafranca del Bierzo, a historically significant stopping points on the Camino Francés. The town earned the nickname "Little Compostela" in the Middle Ages because pilgrims who fell too ill to continue walking could present themselves at the doorway of the Romanesque church of Santiago here and receive the same plenary indulgence they would have received in Santiago de Compostela itself. That Door of Forgiveness, the Puerta del Perdón, still stands.

The hostel is positioned just 150 meters past the Roman bridge over the Burbia river, placing it at a natural threshold as pilgrims enter the town after descending through the Valcarce valley. The building offers 24 beds across a mix of private and shared rooms, with latex mattresses, fresh linens, heating from an ecological pellet boiler, and hot showers with hydromassage. Coffee and tea are provided on arrival, and there is a fully equipped kitchen and free WiFi.

The location suits the setting well. The Valcarce river runs nearby and is shallow enough for wading or foot cooling after a long stage, which many pilgrims find welcome after the climb through O Cebreiro the previous day or the approach ahead. Villafranca itself has a castle, several medieval churches, and a compact old quarter worth exploring if time or tired legs allow a slower afternoon.
