Stage 14 of 21

Villafranca del Bierzo → O Cebreiro

28 km | 9-12 hours | +2129m / -1351m

About This Stage

One of the most demanding stages on the Frances, climbing from the Bierzo valley over the mountains into Galicia. The over 2,100 metres of accumulated ascent across 28 kilometres makes this comparable to the Pyrenees crossing on the first day. The route climbs relentlessly from the valley floor to the mountain village of O Cebreiro at 1,300 metres.

The first section follows the valley through small villages before the serious climbing begins. The ascent is long and steep, passing through increasingly wild mountain scenery. The crossing into Galicia is marked by the regional boundary, and the landscape immediately feels different: greener, mistier, and more Celtic in character.

O Cebreiro is an ancient mountain village with pallozas (pre-Roman round stone houses with thatched roofs), a 9th-century church containing the chalice of a famous Eucharistic miracle, and sweeping mountain views. The village has several albergues and restaurants. Arriving here after the climb is deeply rewarding.

Terrain: Valley floor paths, steep mountain climb, exposed mountain roads, village cobblestones
