Albergue de Peregrinos de Sobrado

Sobrado dos Monxes is one of the most dramatically unexpected stops on the Camino del Norte's inland variant and the Camino Primitivo's convergence route toward Santiago. The albergue sits within the grounds of the Real Monasterio de Santa María de Sobrado, a working Cistercian monastery whose origins date to the tenth century. The monastery was abandoned twice over its history, falling into ruin before being restored and reoccupied by Cistercian monks in 1954. Today the community continues to live and pray here, making this one of the few places on any Camino where pilgrims genuinely share space with an active monastic community.

The albergue itself was renovated in 2020 and offers modern, well-maintained facilities. The kitchen is fully equipped, and the dining room occupies what was once the monastery's stable block, a nicely preserved piece of the complex's agricultural past given a practical new purpose. Pilgrims staying here are welcome to attend daily mass at 7:45 in the morning, with a separate Sunday mass at 11:00. The monks' chant during these services is worth attending even for those without religious motivation.

The monastery church is one of the largest Romanesque and Baroque religious buildings in Galicia and is open to visitors. The cloister, the chapter house, and the church's scale all speak to the immense wealth and influence the monastery once held across the region. Arriving here after a long day's walk, with the monastery looming out of the surrounding woodland, tends to leave an impression.
