The Albergue de Peregrinos de Zabalbide opened in June 2026, making it one of the newest pilgrim hostels on the Camino del Norte. It occupies a converted municipal water reservoir, a functional industrial structure that has been transformed into modern accommodation while retaining something of its original character. The building sits about 200 metres from the main route and roughly 1.2 kilometres before the old town, placing it at a useful point for pilgrims arriving into or departing from Bilbao.
The hostel is managed by the Asociación de Amigos de los Caminos de Santiago de Bizkaia and operates on a donativo basis, meaning pilgrims contribute what they can. It is open from June through September and accepts only pilgrims, with check-in between 15:00 and 22:00. There are 60 places spread across two large dormitories of 30 bunks each. Facilities include a microwave, fridge, washing machine and dryer, individual lockers, and secure bicycle storage.
No advance reservations are taken, so arrival in good time during the summer months is advisable, particularly given Bilbao's popularity as a waypoint on both the Camino del Norte and the Camino Vasco por el Litoral.
