Albergue El Convento

Albergue El Convento occupies a wing of the historic Regina Coeli convent in Santillana del Mar, one of the most remarkably preserved medieval towns in northern Spain. The building itself gives the hostel a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that suits the pilgrim experience well, and the Poor Clare Sisters of the San Ildefonso community continue to hold evening religious services just 30 meters away at 7:00 PM, making it easy for pilgrims to attend if they wish.

The hostel is run by the Eleos Association, a non-profit organization with a social mission: it employs people at risk of social exclusion, so staying here supports something beyond just the accommodation. The setup is practical and comfortable, with 60 beds across 26 double dormitories, a garden, outdoor terrace, and an oratory. Linen and towels are included, and community dinners and breakfast are available for an additional cost.

Santillana del Mar itself is worth time beyond just a night's sleep. Despite its name, it sits several kilometers from the sea. The old town is a UNESCO heritage site, with cobbled streets lined with stone manor houses and a Romanesque collegiate church housing the relics of Saint Juliana, from whom the town takes its name. The Altamira cave complex, famous for its Upper Paleolithic paintings, is less than 2 kilometers away, though access to the original cave is strictly limited. The national museum replica is open to visitors and gives a thorough sense of the site's significance.
