Albergue Marejada

Albergue Marejada sits almost literally on the beach at La Isla, a small coastal settlement in the municipality of Colunga on the Camino del Norte. The location is one of the more memorable along this stretch of the Asturian coast, with the sea just a few metres from the entrance.

The albergue accommodates up to 35 pilgrims across four dormitory-style rooms spread over two floors of the main building. Room sizes vary considerably, from smaller four-bed rooms with en-suite facilities to a larger 22-bed dormitory with three showers, toilets and sinks. The ground-floor room uses shared bathroom facilities in the corridor. There is also a restaurant, a covered terrace, and a beach bar on site, along with a small football and basketball court.

One of the more distinctive features of the property is a traditional Asturian hórreo, or panera, a raised granary structure that is a common sight across rural Asturias. This particular one is listed as a heritage structure, and its elevated position gives views out toward the sea. Hórreos were designed to keep grain dry and protected from rodents, raised on stone pillars called pegollos, and they remain one of the most recognisable elements of vernacular architecture in the region. Seeing one as part of a working pilgrimage hostel is a good reminder of how deeply agricultural traditions are embedded in the Asturian landscape that walkers pass through on this route.
