Albergue Municipal de Hontanas

Hontanas sits in a hollow on the Meseta, hidden from view until pilgrims are almost upon it, which gives the village a quality of sudden arrival that walkers on the Camino Francés have noted for centuries. The name is thought to derive from the Latin word for fountains, a reference to the natural springs that made this an obvious stopping point for travellers crossing the dry Castilian plateau.

The municipal albergue occupies a building with roots in the 13th century, when it functioned as a pilgrim hospital known as the Inn of the French. Hospitals along the Camino were not medical facilities in the modern sense but rather places of hospitality, offering shelter, food, and basic care to those making the journey to Santiago de Compostela. The building has been restored and now serves much the same purpose it did in the medieval period, providing a place to rest before or after the long exposed stretch of Meseta walking that defines this section of the route.

The village itself is small, with a population that has dwindled significantly over the decades, but it retains the Gothic church of the Immaculate Conception, parts of which date to the 14th century. For pilgrims arriving from Burgos, Hontanas marks roughly the point where the city falls fully behind and the open plateau takes over. The sense of isolation here is genuine rather than picturesque, and the albergue's location on the old Calle Real, the royal road, reflects how directly the modern Camino traces the medieval one.
