Albergue Municipal Villafranca del Bierzo

The municipal albergue in Villafranca del Bierzo sits at a historically significant stopping point on the Camino Francés, just before pilgrims face the demanding climb into Galicia through the O Cebreiro pass. The town itself has been an important rest point on the pilgrimage route since medieval times, and this hostel continues that tradition by accommodating up to 58 walkers in shared dormitory-style rooms.

Villafranca earned a special place in Camino history through its Iglesia de Santiago, whose northern Puerta del Perdón was granted an extraordinary privilege: pilgrims too ill or injured to complete the journey to Santiago de Compostela could receive the same spiritual indulgences simply by passing through that doorway.
