Albergue Parroquial de San Juan de Ortega

The parish albergue at San Juan de Ortega sits within the monastery complex of the same name, in one of the most isolated villages on the Camino Francés. The settlement exists almost entirely because of the route itself, growing up around the monastery founded in the 12th century by San Juan de Ortega, a disciple of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Both men dedicated their lives to building bridges and roads to help pilgrims cross the difficult terrain of this region, and the church here remains one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Castile.

The albergue holds a particular place in the modern history of the Camino. For decades it was run by Father José María, a priest who became something of a legendary figure among pilgrims during the years when the route was being rediscovered and walked by relatively few people. His garlic soup, served to pilgrims in the evening, became famous well beyond Spain. The hostel he tended was basic but welcoming, and many people who walked the Camino in the 1980s and 1990s count a night here among their most memorable. The building has since been renovated, with a 2026 update improving facilities while retaining its character as an exclusively pilgrim space.

A daily mass with a blessing for pilgrims takes place at 18:00. The church is open from 10:00 to 20:00 and is well worth time to explore, particularly for its sculpted capitals, which include a rare Romanesque depiction of the Annunciation that catches a shaft of light at the spring and autumn equinoxes. Reservations are not accepted, and the hostel operates on a code system so there is no formal closing time.
