The parish hostel in Tosantos is one of the more quietly beloved stops on the Camino Francés, run on a donativo basis by José Luis, a veteran pilgrim who has shaped the place around the original spirit of the walk rather than the logistics of it.

The evening routine here is what pilgrims tend to remember long after they leave. Before dinner, José Luis leads the group up to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, a small chapel carved directly into the limestone cliff face above the village. The hermitage dates to medieval times and sits tucked into the rock in a way that is easy to miss from the road below. After returning for a communal meal, each pilgrim writes a message on a card explaining why they are walking the Camino. The cards are added to a growing archive, and pilgrims then draw cards left by previous walkers and read them aloud to the group. It is a simple ritual, but the effect is often surprisingly powerful.

The hostel itself is basic, with shared dormitories and mats on the floor, which keeps the atmosphere unpretentious and self-selecting. Those who stay tend to be there for the experience rather than the comfort. It is open from mid-March to mid-November, with registration in the morning and a 10pm closing time.

Tosantos sits roughly 25 kilometres from Granón, another well-regarded donativo hostel known for its community spirit, making the two a natural pairing on consecutive nights for pilgrims looking to connect with that older, less commercial side of the Camino.
