Albergue Tío Pepe Mesón

Albergue Tío Pepe sits in the small village of Villar de Mazarife, a quiet farming settlement on the southern variant of the Camino Francés through the Leonese meseta. This route, sometimes called the Camino por el Sur or the Omaña variant, offers an alternative to the busier main road through Villadangos del Páramo, trading traffic noise for open fields and a more solitary walking experience.

The albergue takes its name from a traditional Spanish expression and has a relaxed, unhurried character well suited to the meseta's pace. Rooms look out toward the village church, which is home to stork nests, a common sight across rural Castile and León where white storks return each spring to rebuild their large platform nests on bell towers and rooftops. The courtyard is a practical and social space where pilgrims can sit at tables, hang laundry to dry in the Leonese sun, and decompress after a long day crossing the flat plain.

The hostel runs a pilgrim menu, which in Spain typically means a set three-course meal with wine, designed around the needs and budget of walkers on the road. Guests can also bring in groceries from local shops, which gives some flexibility on days when a full sit-down meal is not what's needed. A café-bar rounds out the facilities.
