About this property
Albergue Ultreia sits in Portomarín, one of the more historically layered stops on the Camino Francés. The town itself has an unusual origin: in the 1960s, the original village of Portomarín was deliberately flooded to create the Belesar reservoir on the Miño River. Before the waters rose, the most significant buildings were carefully dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt on higher ground. The fortress-church of San Xoán, a Romanesque structure built by the Knights of Saint John in the 12th century, was among those relocated and dominates the town center today. In dry years, the ruins of the old village occasionally resurface from the reservoir, a striking reminder of what lies beneath.
The albergue is a family-run operation, which tends to make for a more personal experience than larger institutional pilgrim hostels. It offers both dormitory bunks and private rooms, useful for pilgrims who want flexibility depending on how their legs and their budget are holding up. Portomarín sits roughly 90 kilometers from Santiago de Compostela, putting it within the final stretch for most walkers and making it a popular and sometimes busy stop. The town has a good concentration of services relative to its size, and the riverfront setting adds to its appeal after a long day on the trail.
