The Virgen de Guadalupe albergue sits at the entrance to Cirueña, a small village in La Rioja that most pilgrims pass through on the Camino de Santiago between Nájera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The village itself is an odd mix of old stone houses and a large, largely empty golf resort development that was built during Spain's pre-2008 construction boom and never fully realized. Walking into Cirueña, the contrast between the traditional rural settlement and the abandoned fairways is one of the more quietly surreal sights on this stretch of the Camino.
The hostel opened in 2009 and is run privately by Pedro Mari. It is exclusively for pilgrims, which keeps the atmosphere focused. The setup is simple and practical: five bedrooms with low bunk beds, space for ten people in shared dormitories, and a price of 20 euros per night. A communal dinner is available for 15 euros and breakfast for 9 euros, both of which are worth considering given that Cirueña has very limited food options otherwise. Washing and drying facilities are available for an extra cost, and there is covered storage for bicycles.
The hostel is open from mid-March through the end of October and accepts reservations, which is useful on busy summer days when beds along this stage can fill up. Check-in starts at noon and the doors close at 21:30.
