Albergue Virgen de la Encina

Vega de Valcarce sits in the deep, green valley of the Valcarce River in the El Bierzo region of León, one of the last significant villages before the Camino Francés begins its steep climb toward O Cebreiro and the Galician border. Pilgrims arriving here have typically come through a long stretch from Villafranca del Bierzo, and the village marks a natural resting point before one of the route's most demanding ascents.

This parish albergue, run by an Augustinian community, operates from June through August and takes up to 25 pilgrims. What distinguishes it from many municipal or private options along the Camino is its explicitly communal and spiritual character. The day here has a rhythm to it: a Pilgrim's Eucharist at 7:00 PM is followed by a communal dinner at 8:00 PM, and the evening closes with a Pilgrim's Blessing at 9:00 PM. For pilgrims walking the Camino with a religious or reflective purpose, this structure offers something harder to find as the route becomes busier closer to Santiago.

The albergue is named for the Virgen de la Encina, the Virgin of the Holm Oak, who is the patron saint of El Bierzo. The image and devotion associated with her have deep roots in this region, tied to a medieval legend of discovery and local veneration that predates the modern pilgrimage revival by centuries.

Both dinner and breakfast are provided, which is a practical comfort at the end of a long day. Cyclists should note that bike storage is available in an enclosed but uncovered area.
