Albergueria Frade

Albergueria Frade sits in O Cebreiro, one of the most storied stopping points on the Camino Francés. At around 1,300 metres above sea level, this Galician mountain village marks the final major ascent of the French Way and the crossing from Castile into Galicia, a transition pilgrims have been making since at least the 9th century. The village itself is home to the Romanesque church of Santa María la Real, which houses a 12th-century Romanesque statue of the Virgin and a chalice said to have inspired medieval legends of the Holy Grail.

The accommodation is a country house rather than a traditional pilgrim hostel, offering a quieter and more private alternative to the larger albergues nearby. It features parquet floors, a garden, and en-suite facilities including a private bathroom with bath and bidet, which walkers arriving after a demanding climb tend to appreciate. Parking is available for those arriving by vehicle or supporting a walking companion.

The surrounding area has more to offer than the Camino alone. Las Médulas, the remarkable Roman gold mines carved into the mountains of the Bierzo some 48 kilometres away, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well worth a detour for anyone with time before or after the walk. Lake Carucedo nearby is directly connected to that mining history, formed largely by the ancient hydraulic engineering the Romans used to work the landscape.
