Costa Selvagem

Hostel Costa Selvagem sits in the small coastal settlement of Marinhas, near Esposende in northern Portugal, a few minutes' walk from the Atlantic shoreline that gives the area its name. "Costa Selvagem" translates roughly as "wild coast," a fitting description for this stretch of the Minho coastline, where long sandy beaches meet wind-shaped dunes and the sea can be rough and dramatic even in summer.

The hostel lies directly on the Portuguese Coastal Way (Caminho Portugues da Costa), one of the main routes pilgrims and long-distance walkers follow north through Portugal toward Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. This coastal variant of the Caminho Portugues has grown considerably in popularity in recent years, attracting both pilgrims completing the official route and walkers drawn more by the scenery than the spiritual destination.

The accommodation is straightforward pilgrim-style: two shared dormitories of eight beds each, plus two private rooms with double beds, a shared kitchen for self-catering, and laundry facilities including washing machines and an outdoor sink for hand-washing gear. Breakfast is available as an optional add-on. The garden provides a quiet place to rest after a long day on the trail, and the proximity to the beach makes it an easy detour for anyone wanting to walk down to the water before or after a stage.
