Donativo Albergue de Peregrinos - Aves de Paso

Aves de Paso (Birds of Passage) is a small pilgrim shelter in the coastal village of Pendueles, on the Camino del Norte through Asturias. The name is a fitting one: the hostel sits just fifty meters from the route, welcoming walkers who are, like migratory birds, passing through on a longer journey.

Open since 2013 and under new management from 2023, the hostel runs on a donation basis, which places it in the tradition of albergues that prioritize hospitality over profit. It has a single shared dormitory with fourteen beds, and the atmosphere tends to be communal. A vegetarian community dinner is offered, which gives pilgrims the chance to eat together and share the day's walk rather than heading off separately to a restaurant.

The host, Anna Visser, speaks several languages including English, French, German, and Dutch, which reflects the international mix of walkers passing through on the northern coastal route. Bedding is provided, and there is a washer and dryer available, practical details that matter considerably after several days on a long trail. The hostel accepts reservations and operates from late March through the end of October.

Pendueles itself is a small, quiet village between Llanes and Unquera, in a stretch of the Asturian coast known for dramatic clifftops and green interior hills. It sees far fewer visitors than the towns on the Camino Francés, which is part of the appeal of the northern routes.
