About this property

The Monastery of Zenarruza sits in a quiet valley in the Basque Country, and has been a place of religious life and pilgrimage hospitality for centuries. Founded in the 10th century, it is home to a community of Premonstratensian canons and remains an active monastery today. The church, a fine example of Gothic architecture, was declared a national monument and draws visitors for both its history and its setting among wooded hills.

Pilgrims walking the Camino del Norte or the Camino Vasco por el Interior will find the monastery directly on route. The community welcomes walkers with a simple albergue offering shared dormitories and a genuinely monastic experience. There is one communal evening meal and breakfast, both by donation. Pilgrims are invited to join the canons for Vespers in the church each evening, a short prayer service lasting around half an hour, and a pilgrim blessing is available on request.

One unexpected detail: the monastery produces its own craft beer under the name Cerveza Monacal Ziortza, available in blonde, amber, and dark varieties from the monastery shop. It is a small but notable sideline that reflects a long European tradition of monastic brewing. Check-in is from 15:30, or 15:45 on Sundays and public holidays. Reservations are not accepted, so arriving on time matters.

Some details may vary. Contact the property directly to confirm up-to-date information.
