Private Albergue
El Jardín del Camino is a privately run pilgrim hostel sitting at the entrance to Mansilla de las Mulas, right on the road into town, making it one of the first stops pilgrims encounter after the long stretch from Burgos across the Castilian meseta. It has been operating since 2010 under the management of Olga Brez.
The hostel offers 44 beds spread across four rooms: one large dormitory with 32 places and three smaller rooms of four beds each, the latter with private bathrooms. Prices range from 15 to 20 euros depending on the season. Services include a bar and restaurant with a set menu, washing and drying facilities, a bicycle shed, and the option to camp on site for those who prefer it. Disposable sheets are available at an extra cost.
Mansilla de las Mulas itself is worth a moment's attention. It sits where the Esla River meets the old Roman road, and its medieval walls, though partially ruined, still ring much of the old town center and are among the better-preserved examples in the region. The town was an important stopping point on the Camino Francés for centuries, and its name likely refers to the mule trading that once took place here. From Mansilla, León is roughly 18 kilometers further west, a manageable half-day walk.
